WP Engine Advanced Network

WP Engine Advanced Network – How Does it Work?

The new advanced network is something WP Engine has been working hard on for the past year for better innovations, performance, and security in partnership with Cloudflare.

And the performance will get even better with the WP Engine's new Advanced Network. This post will explain all the essential aspects of the WP Engine Advanced Network.

Different Network Types

It's essential to understand the difference between the different networks to comprehend the importance of the WP Engine New Advanced Network. The best place to start is to know how a primary network works. In a basic network, visitors will connect to your site and access the site resources directly.

The next model is a basic network plus CDN, which used to be MaxCDN in WP Engine's case. In this network model, visitors will access the HTML files directly from the website, and the images, js, and CSS files will be served through the CDN in their cached version. This offers a comparatively better loading time than the former model, i.e., without a CDN.

Source – WP Engine

In the New Advanced Network, all files, including HTML, CSS, js, and images, would be served through Cloudflare CDN, and visitors will not even have to reach the origin server. This ensures faster delivery of content and better security for sites at a DNS level.

WP Engine Advanced Network: Salient Features

Layer 3 & 4 DDoS Protection

The New Advanced Network is developing comprehensive DDoS Protection, protecting websites, applications, and entire networks. Cloudflare DDoS Protection is built for anything that is connected to the internet. Most importantly, Cloudflare uses intelligent and automated mitigations at the edge to ensure the best DDoS protection.

Cloudflare Powerful CDN

Cloudflare CDN gives you the advantage of a fast and secure global network using ultra-fast static and dynamic content delivery over our global edge network. Cloudflare has an expansive global network to serve the content to the target audience from the closest location. Cloudflare supports static and dynamic content in conjunction with powerful network technologies such as Agro Smart Routing and Load Balancing. Besides, Cloudflare CDN is highly customizable, and the CDN can essentially help you save bandwidth.

Cloudflare Polish

Cloudflare Polish is another compelling feature, and it's the automatic image optimization feature of Cloudflare. Images can adversely affect the loading time of websites, and this is where image optimization comes into play. Cloudflare Polish is a one-click image optimization that automatically pulls the images from the origin and optimizes them in its cache. That way, whenever visitors request these images, only optimized versions of them would be served to them, making the page load remarkably fast.

HTTP/3 Support

The Advanced Network also offers HTTP/3 support, and with this in place, all HTTP requests will be accelerated by using QUIC to provide better encryption than TCP and TLS.

How to Update to the Advanced Network?

Even though the new advanced network will be made available to all users, you will need to update the advanced network to use it. You can edit the advanced network using the User Portal.

The process isn't complicated, and you can do it by following these simple steps:

  • You can start by logging in to your User Portal
  • Next up, you can select an environment from the Sites page and click Domains in the secondary menu on the left
  • After that, you will need to locate your domain and click on Update Network near the domain
  • After you need to click on Enable now to verify your changes, it will display your CNAME and IP information
  • Next, you will have to update the DNS details with your domain provider and click on I'm finished here.

What to Expect In WP Engine Advanced Network?

Performance and security in WP Engine are getting to the ultimate next level with the WP Engine Advanced Network. With the WP Engine Advanced Network, the basic CDN offering with MaxCDN will no longer be available, and customers will also need to remove the zone URL for MaxCDN since Cloudflare works on the DNS level doesn't utilize custom zone URLs. Besides WP Engine, Kinsta also integrated Cloudflare Enterprise into its tech stack. You can compare the performance of both WP Engine and Kinsta if you're looking to buy hosting between these two companies.
