Cloudways Premium Vs Standard: Bought, Tested & Compared
If you’re considering signing up for Cloudways and are uncertain about choosing between DigitalOcean Premium and Standard plans, you’ve landed on the right page.
As a part of the Hostingstep methodology, I bought a hosting account at both Premium and standard plans, installed identical test sites, and put them for 24/7, 365 days of performance monitoring using the industry’s best tools.
I have been doing this for the last few years, and to provide you with the latest data, I have considered the performance data between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024.
Cloudways Premium Vs Standard: speed and Uptime Performance
Using our proprietary performance data, let’s begin analyzing both plans. The TTFB and Uptime are the most crucial metrics to evaluate the speed and reliability of a hosting company.
Based on the last 12 months data, both Cloudways Premium and standard plans recorded an average response time TTFB of 405ms. The uptime scores are also similar with 99.99% but standard plan recorded 1 hour 2 minutes of downtime wheras premium is slighltly better with 43 minutes of downtime.
Our TTFB and uptime are measured from 22 North American regions using the Pingdom Syntethic monitoring tool, providing the most accurate speed and uptime data. With a minimal higher price, Cloudways Premium seems to offer better reliability.
Load Test:
The load test measures how fast the servers work at handling traffic spikes. I sent 500 concurrent visitors to both the premium and standard test sites.
In load test, Cloudways Premium recorded an average response time of 245 ms, the standard got an response time of 275 ms. The fact that the “lower the response time, faster is your server” means the premium plan handles the load better.
Hardware performance:
Cloudways DigitalOcean Premium utilizes Intel Xeon Second Generation Scalable Processors with built-in AI acceleration and Intel mesh architecture.
Compared to the Standard series, Cloudways DigitalOcean Premium has more powerful processors with a base frequency of 2.50 GHz and a max turbo frequency of 3.90 GHz. This provides a significant performance boost over the Standard series.
Furthermore, Cloudways Premium offers accelerated memory and NVMe storage, while the Standard series uses SSD storage. It is important to note that NVMe drives have faster read/write speeds than traditional SATA SSDs, and Cloudways Premium also has enhanced memory performance with a frequency of 2933 GHz.
To validate the fact that Cloudways Premium offers faster backend performance, we use the WPBenchmark Plugin to measure performance.
The results indicated that the Cloudways Premium got a server score of 7.7, while the Standard site scored 6.6. The Premium site excelled with faster CPU & Memory operations and database operations.
Based on our findings, Cloudways Premium is an ideal choice for those seeking improved server-side cache workloads, database management, and disk performance, thanks to its powerful processor and NVMe storage. This translates to significant improvements in backend performance, making it an excellent option for resource-intensive sites.
However, if your site is not particularly resource-intensive, the Standard droplet may be more than sufficient for your needs. Ultimately, the choice between Cloudways Premium and Standard should be based on your specific needs and budget.

Cloudways Standard vs Premium – Which is Best?
Cloudways Premium offers better load handling and faster backend performance, making it our ideal recommendation. However, Cloudways standard is value for money as there is no much difference in speed and uptime of both servers.
If you’re on a budget or just starting with your online journey, Cloudways Standard is a suitable option. If you have a resource-intensive site or are seeking improved backend performance, Cloudways Premium may be the better choice.
